On the day of Apple’s annual general meeting, Students and Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour (SACOM) is urging Apple again to take immediate and constructive action to fulfil its corporate responsibility by improving the working conditions in its suppliers.

Despite respectable quarterly revenues of US$57.6 billion and a net quarterly profit of US$13.1 billion in the first quarter of its fiscal year of 2014[1], the company is unwilling to share its success with frontline workers – those who turn its ideas into real products. [Statement] No more iSlave on cover glass – Biel Crystal pledge to improve labour basic condition

On 25 November, SACOM released an investigative report focused on the labour condition in Hong Kong-owned Apple supplier – Biel Crystal’s Huizhou factory. The research discovered numerous labour abuses and violation of Chinese Labour Law.

On 29 November, SACOM held a meeting with Mr. K.M. Yeung, President of Biel Crystal and expressed our discontent with the labour abuses and appalling working conditions in Biel Crystal factory. In the meeting, Yeung pledged to take the following actions to labour malpractices before January 2014:

This summer, SACOM conducted an investigative research towards the labour condition in Hong Kong-owned Apple supplier – Biel Crystal’s Huizhou factory and discovered numerous labour abuses and violation of Chinese Labour Law. SACOM decided to publish the investigation result and file complaint officially to the Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition (EICC). We are now here with other local labour NGOs to protest in Biel Crystal office and Apple flagship store for its bloody exploitation to workers.

Foxconn should keep its promise; we need no fake trade unions

This is the fourth year of Students & Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour (SACOM) and other local organizations to come to the Annual General Meeting of Foxconn International Holdings Limited to protest against Foxconn’s maltreatment of workers and its broken promise of trade union democratization.

On 4 February 2013, Financial Times reported Foxconn would start trade union democratization in its Chinese factories with the assistance of Fair Labor Association (FLA).

Workers’ Outrage over Immoral Costco Supplier in Shenzhen

More than 200 workers from Delta Smooth Limited (金顺台艺品厂) in Shenzhen, a supplier of Costco in China have launched a series of street protests since 6 May, as the owner refused to pay their wages, social insurance and economic compensation after the factory closure. They marched to the township and district government offices to demand investigation into the issue but received no response. Delta Smooth’s biggest client is Costco– the second largest retailer in US and the seventh largest retailer in the world.
