[Press Release] Throw Away the Bad Apple – Labour groups call for ethical production!

Students and Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour (SACOM), together with Worker Empowerment (WE), Globalization Monitor (GM), Left 21, Labour Education & Service Network (LESN), Asia Monitor Resource Centre (AMRC) staged a protest outside Apple Store in Canton Road this morning (25 September) to urge Apple to apply immediate measures to rectify exploitations in its supply chain from root causes and to release its latest investigative report on Lens Technology. The investigation took place from January to June 2015, discovered various issues of labour condition in the factory.

SACOM has started Apple campaign since 2010. Over the years, mobile gadgets have dominated our daily lives. SACOM believes that humanity could go hand in hand with technology innovation. Through our endless investigation in mainland China, we aim to disclose the working condition in Apple supply chain to consumers and the general public.

In Q1 2015, Apple took 92 per cent of profits in the world’s smartphone industry. The company remains the most valuable company in the world. Lens Technology, one of the biggest glass supplier to Apple is growing explosively. Its president Zhou Qunfei became China’s richest woman after Lens listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. Statement: Low wages, long hours, fake union! Decent working conditions to Foxconn workers immediately!

Today (28 May 2015), Students & Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour, together with other local labour rights concern groups and students stage a protest at the Annual General Meeting of FIH Mobile Limited, a subsidiary of Foxconn Technology Group, to against the exploitation to Chinese workers and the broken promises of salary increment and direct election of trade union in the factories.

This year, a mainland civil society organization called “ilabour Action Group” conducted a research about the wages, working hours, trade union and the management system in Foxconn factories from Shenzhen, Zhengzhou, Chongqing and Chengdu. [Statement] Apple still has miles to go despite the recent toxins ban

On 13 August 2014, Apple announced the ban on benzene and n-hexane in the final assembly facilities of its iPhone and iPad products, a response to SACOM and other labour concern groups’ long-term campaign for a better working condition in Apple supply chain. Regrettably, it is a too-late commitment and there are still miles to achieve a healthy and safe environment to all workers in the Apple supply chain, when the ban is only effective in final assembly factories.

In Apple’s announcement, it claimed that investigations were conducted in 22 final assembly factories for the use of benzene and n-hexane. The investigative reports are undisclosed and Apple does not reveal the consequence of suppliers that failed to meet [...]

[Statement] Supporting “Let’s Tackle Apple Action” of May of Solidarity in Europe

Today, workers and activists call for the “Let’s Tackle Apple Action” in different European cities, in front of the stores of the world’s most valuable brand Apple, to protest against Apple and its chief supplier Foxconn in labour exploitation. This concrete, transnational solidarity action is part of the May of Solidarity mobilization promoted by the Blockupy’s coordination and is very meaningful in nurturing grassroots strength, and challenging corporate squeeze in global electronic production. SACOM stands by our comrades around the world to end exploitation.
