Explosion at Foxconn is not Accidental; Predicaments of Workers Remain

Students & Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour (SACOM) visited the Foxconn’s plants in Chengdu, the production sites of iPad, in March 2011. Workers from the polishing department state that they always breathe in the aluminium dust. The ventilation in the department is poor. Even though they have worn gloves, their hands are still covered by dust and so as their face and clothes. Unfortunately, the dust on workers’ face cannot be seen in order to protect the identities of workers.

A blast broke out at Foxconn’s plant in Chengdu on 20 May evening killed 2 workers and injured 16. The plant is situated in the Processing Zone of Pi County, Chengdu and is a major production site for iPad. The explosion is not accidental.

SACOM pinpointed the problem of the aluminum dust in the polishing department in its report in early May 2011.
