[Press Release] Throw Away the Bad Apple – Labour groups call for ethical production!

Students and Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour (SACOM), together with Worker Empowerment (WE), Globalization Monitor (GM), Left 21, Labour Education & Service Network (LESN), Asia Monitor Resource Centre (AMRC) staged a protest outside Apple Store in Canton Road this morning (25 September) to urge Apple to apply immediate measures to rectify exploitations in its supply chain from root causes and to release its latest investigative report on Lens Technology. The investigation took place from January to June 2015, discovered various issues of labour condition in the factory.

Today (28 May 2015), Students & Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour, together with other local labour rights concern groups and students stage a protest at the Annual General Meeting of FIH Mobile Limited, a subsidiary of Foxconn Technology Group, to against the exploitation to Chinese workers and the broken promises of salary increment and direct election of trade union in the factories.

This year, a mainland civil society organization called “ilabour Action Group” conducted a research about the wages, working hours, trade union and the management system in Foxconn factories from Shenzhen, Zhengzhou, Chongqing and Chengdu. Today (19th September) is the official launch day of the pre-reserved iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus which are remarkably configured with bigger size of touch screen. Although some customers may be impressed by the new product, SACOM discloses the unacceptable slavery working condition in Pegatron Corporation, which is one of the key Apple’s suppliers producing about 50% of iPhone 6.

[Statement] Apple still has miles to go despite the recent toxins ban

Hong Kong, 16 August 2014

On 13 August 2014, Apple announced the ban on benzene and n-hexane in the final assembly facilities of its iPhone and iPad products, a response to SACOM and other labour concern groups’ long-term campaign for a better working condition in Apple supply chain. Regrettably, it is a too-late commitment and there are still miles to achieve a healthy and safe environment to all workers in the Apple supply chain, when the ban is only effective in final assembly factories.

In Apple’s announcement, it claimed that investigations were conducted in 22 final assembly factories for the use of benzene and n-hexane. The investigative reports are undisclosed and Apple does not reveal the consequence of suppliers that failed to meet [...]
